In a significant step toward strengthening cardiac care in the public health system, the Maharashtra government has approved the setup of Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories (Cath Labs) across 11 government medical colleges, including Mumbai’s Gokuldas Tejpal (G.T.) Government Medical College. These facilities will be developed through a Public–Private Partnership (PPP) to ensure quicker and more specialised treatment for heart-related emergencies
Why this expansion is needed
Health department officials noted a sharp rise in cardiac cases across Maharashtra. Factors such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and increasing stress levels among younger people have contributed to a growing burden of heart disease. To address this demand, the Medical Education and Research Department has moved to expand access to cardiac-intervention services across the state.
Reduced load on major Mumbai hospitals
The upcoming Cath Lab at G.T. Hospital is expected to ease pressure on major civic-run hospitals like J.J., Nair, KEM, and Sion Hospital. Once operational, it will offer faster diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures for patients from South Mumbai and nearby regions, reducing waiting times and improving emergency care.
The centre will house modern equipment, including an anaesthesia workstation, echocardiography system and ACT device. This will enable procedures such as angiography, angioplasty, and other cardiac interventions to be performed more efficiently.
How the PPP model will work
Under the approved PPP structure:
- The private partner will invest in and install medical equipment.
- The state government will provide the required infrastructure such as physical space, water, electricity, and oxygen supply.
- The partnership will run for 15 years, with an option to extend for an additional five years, pending government approval.
This model aims to combine public infrastructure with private-sector efficiency to improve service delivery.
Medical colleges selected for Cath Lab development
Cath Labs will be set up at the following institutions:
- G.T. Government Medical College, Mumbai
- Swami Ramanand Teerth GMC, Ambajogai
- Bhausaheb Hire GMC, Dhule
- Government Medical College, Nagpur
- Dr. Shankarrao Chavan GMC, Nanded
- GMC, Gondia
- GMC, Miraj
- GMC, Palghar
- Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj GMC, Satara
- Vasantrao Naik GMC, Yavatmal
- B.J. Government Medical College, Pune
Impact on statewide cardiac care
The introduction of these labs is expected to significantly improve access to timely cardiac treatment in both rural and urban regions. With more centres capable of handling complex heart-related emergencies, Maharashtra aims to strengthen its cardiac-care network and reduce mortality associated with heart disease.
