According to the hospital, three specialised interventions are now available:
🔹 Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) 🔹 Modified Electroconvulsive Therapy (mECT) 🔹 Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS)
These therapies are typically recommended for individuals who do not respond adequately to medication or counselling. In private hospitals, the cost of such treatment can range between ₹1.5 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh, making Safdarjung’s initiative one of the most accessible in the country.
Focus on Severe Mental-Health Disorders
The new facility will support patients dealing with:
Treatment-resistant depression
OCD and anxiety disorders
Schizophrenia and psychosis
Severe mood disorders
Suicidal tendencies
Doctors noted that neuro-stimulation therapies help activate specific areas of the brain associated with mood regulation, offering significant improvement in cases where conventional treatment fails.
Strengthening Public Mental Healthcare
Government hospitals in India rarely offer these advanced therapies at large scale. Safdarjung’s decision is expected to encourage more public-sector institutions to adopt similar mental-health programmes.
The hospital has also increased the number of trained professionals in its psychiatry department to manage the growing patient load. Officials said that the free service aims to reduce financial barriers and ensure early and effective intervention.
A Step Toward Broader Mental-Health Reform
India faces a rising mental-health burden, with nearly 1 in 7 Indians estimated to be affected by psychiatric disorders. Experts say expanding access to neuro-modulation therapies can improve treatment outcomes and reduce long-term health and economic strain on families.
Safdarjung Hospital’s initiative marks an important step in strengthening the country’s public mental-health infrastructure.
